DeCarbonization in the Desert: Lessons from the Southwest
In the Southwest, climate reality is impossible to ignore. Rising temperatures, water scarcity, and grid stress are not theoretical—they are daily operational constraints. That reality framed every conversation at the Southwest DeCarbonization Forum in Phoenix, Arizona in February 2025.
What emerged was a powerful lesson: effective decarbonization must be regional, contextual, and pragmatic.
Discussions focused on passive cooling strategies, electrification readiness, water-smart design, and the integration of renewable energy at scale. Importantly, these strategies were not framed as sacrifices—but as opportunities for resilience, cost control, and long-term viability.
One of the most compelling themes was the integration of climate adaptation into early planning. Buildings and infrastructure designed today must perform under future conditions, not historical averages.
Our HumannInc team views climate adaptation as a necessary consideration and design challenge rooted in empathy and foresight. Designing with location specific purpose for people means designing for the realities they will face—not the ones we wish would persist.
